Le Grand Colbert

Le Grand Colbert is an iconic Parisian brasserie located at 2 Rue Vivienne, nestled between the Stock Exchange and the gardens of the Palais Royal. Its origins date back to 1637, when the original building was commissioned by Guillaume Bautru, Count of Serrant, and designed by the architect Louis Le Vau as a private mansion. The property later belonged to Jean-Baptiste Colbert, minister of Louis XIV, and then to Philippe d'Orléans in 1719. After serving as the office of state debt in 1806, the original hotel was demolished to make way for the current building and the Galerie Colbert, which opened its doors in 1828. The site transformed into a restaurant named "Au Grand Colbert" in 1900, retaining its historic name. The grand dining room impresses with its six-metre high walls, sculpted pilasters, painted wood décor in Pompeian style classified as a historical work of art, and its rare mosaic floors, creating a monumental and elegant atmosphere that reflects the heritage of Parisian brasseries. The cuisine showcases traditional family-style French brasserie dishes prepared from fresh ingredients and homemade techniques, with a strong emphasis on seafood. The menu also offers bistro classics, Parisian specialties, sauerkraut dishes, and tea selections, all served in a classic brasserie format.
