La Cabane au Drapeau

La Cabane au Drapeau is an oyster tasting venue located by the Canal des Ors at the entrance of Île d'Oléron. It offers a panoramic view of the Seudre estuary, Saint-Trojan, Ronce-les-Bains, and the Seudre bridge. The restaurant specializes in naturally cultivated oysters raised on-site, served with local products such as shrimp, whelks, other seafood, Charentais grillons, and wines from the island. These oysters are guaranteed fresh thanks to a short supply chain with no transport or intermediaries, reflecting an authentic oyster bar deeply rooted in the local oyster farming landscape. The establishment dates back to 1964 when Jocelyne and Raymond Marsaud took over a small oyster farm on the Canal des Ors. In the 1990s, they built a new oyster hut and adjacent basins. In 2009, their children pooled their oyster concessions to expand the operation while maintaining the 130 m² hut dedicated to the cultivation and shipping of oysters. Since 2025, Benjamin Jeanne has continued the Marsaud family tradition, preserving the commitment to 100% natural Marennes-Oléron oysters and opening a tasting area on-site. The location features an authentic oyster hut with a terrace overlooking the sea and the Canal des Ors, providing a picturesque estuarine setting and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Its rustic coastal vibe is closely linked to the environment of an active oyster farming operation, making it an ideal spot for sunset aperitifs. The cuisine highlights ultra-local shellfish and seafood, emphasizing freshness, short supply chains, and regional accompaniments. In the summer of 2025, the restaurant will introduce éclade de moules, a traditional Charentais coastal specialty prepared table-side with flaming pine needles, offering a friendly and smoky tasting experience available by reservation in the evening.
