Al Monastero

Al Monastero is a historic restaurant founded in 1990 by Giuseppe Pavan, located in the heart of Cividale del Friuli. The building features an ancient terracotta bas-relief inspired by 16th-century documents, depicting San Tommaso, San Donato, and the Madonna dei Battuti resting on a seven-branched oak symbolizing the works of mercy. The interior comprises several small, inviting rooms, including a traditional Friulian fogolar (fireplace) for winter, a room adorned with a fresco of Bacchus, and rustic spaces designed for ceremonies and special occasions. The restaurant’s renovated inner courtyard, dating from 2000, hosts charming candlelit dinners throughout the summer months. Its menu emphasizes traditional regional cuisine prepared with seasonal ingredients and a deep connection to local culture. Signature dishes include Montasio cheese strudel, Cialcions del Monastero, maltagliati pasta with duck ragout, and Tournedos al Monastero style. Al Monastero also produces many of its own wines. Naive paintings by Jacun Pitor further enrich the walls, strengthening the venue’s unique ambiance and historic legacy.
