IU & ON

IU & ON is a family-run Thai restaurant in Nuremberg, operating since 1972 under the Harirak family and presented as Nuremberg’s first Thai restaurant and among the oldest worldwide. It began as bistro NID NOI, opened by Pieroh and Roland Kraus in the old town in 1972; the younger Harirak sisters Iu and On joined in the mid-1980s and later relocated to the Johannis district as IU&ON. Ingredients were originally self-imported when a reliable fresh supply chain was unavailable; curries remain sourced from the sisters’ home region and are refined in-house. The restaurant offers private exclusive hire and bespoke menu planning drawing on more than five decades of experience. The dining room is minimalistic and modern, with simple, lightly decorated tables, modern graphic elements and contemporary lamps creating a restrained, well-balanced ambience; the restaurant accommodates approximately 60 guests. The menu changes weekly; the kitchen centers each dish on one product and seasons with herbs such as coriander and lemongrass, prioritizing balanced spice, aromatics and wine-friendly execution. The house pairs its Thai cuisine primarily with European wines (Germany, France, Italy, Spain) and is noted in the Michelin Guide as SELECTED. Chef-owner Waraporn Harirak Bingöl.
