Fox & Hounds

The Fox & Hounds is an independent family-run freehouse established in 2004 and owned by James and Bianca Rix. The business operates The Fox Shop selling locally produced foods, home-prepared ready meals and a selection of local beers, wines and spirits; the restaurant is consistently listed in the MICHELIN Guide and holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand every year from 2012–2024. A spacious bar and lounge leads to a dining room with high ceilings, large windows and a striking chandelier. A large garden, a terrace for al fresco dining and a heated gazebo create a relaxed yet elegant pub-restaurant suited to candlelit dinners and private parties. The kitchen produces creative, seasonal dishes with rustic Italian and French influences, changing the menu regularly to reflect the best produce. It emphasises hand-rolled pasta, whole grilled fish and charcoal-grilled steaks prepared in a Josper charcoal oven to impart smoky, barbecue-like flavours while keeping food moist; sources include rare-breed meat, Cornish native lobsters and local game. Chef James Rix trained from the age of 15 and worked with Gary Rhodes, Pierre Koffmann and Alastair Little, later serving as head chef at Tom Conran’s The Cow before opening The Fox & Hounds. Specialties include Sunday Lunch (whole ribs of beef finished in the Josper oven), Josper-grilled steaks, hand-rolled pasta, whole grilled fish and Cornish Native Lobster.
