What is The 5-Whys Lightning Round?
The 5-Whys Lightning Round is a team building activity based on the “5 Whys” method: asking “why?” repeatedly to move from symptoms to root causes. Teams tackle a small, low-stakes problem (realistic but safe), and practice digging deeper without blaming individuals.
How do you play The 5-Whys Lightning Round?
Split into teams of 3 to 5. Give each team a prompt like “The weekly report is always late,” or “Meetings keep running over time.” Teams write the problem at the top of a page, then ask “Why did this happen?” five times, each answer leading to the next why. After 10 minutes, teams share their root cause and one concrete improvement idea.
Why it’s great for a team
It builds a shared habit: focus on systems, not people. It encourages structured thinking, better questioning, and alignment on what actually drives problems. Teams often realize they were solving the wrong issue (symptom) and identify clearer actions.
How to organize it effectively
Pick issues that are common but not sensitive. Timebox strictly to keep it lightweight. Encourage teams to phrase causes in neutral language (process, information, tooling). Close by collecting improvement ideas and choosing one “small experiment” the team can try in the next week.
