Raft Building Challenge
Time for the team building activity: 2–3 hours
Setup effort: Moderate to high
Estimated cost: Medium to high
Business value: Strengthens collaboration, encourages strategic thinking, and develops hands-on teamwork through adventurous team building activities
What is the Raft Building Challenge?
The Raft Building Challenge is an adventurous team building activity where teams design and build a floating raft using limited materials such as wooden planks, ropes, barrels or inflatable tubes, and paddles. The goal is to construct a raft capable of floating and carrying team members across a short water course. Once built, teams test their rafts in a race or navigation challenge, combining engineering, creativity, and teamwork.
How do you play the Raft Building Challenge?
Divide participants into teams of 4 to 6 people and give each team the same building materials. Teams have 45–60 minutes to design and construct their raft, making decisions about weight distribution, structure, and stability. Once construction is complete, teams launch the rafts and complete a short race or navigation task to test performance.
Why it’s great for a team
Raft building forces real collaboration: teams must plan, build, and test under constraints, and success depends on alignment—not individual effort. It encourages creative problem-solving, hands-on coordination, and adaptability when designs don’t work on first launch. Successfully floating and moving together creates a strong sense of shared achievement and memorable team pride.
How to organize it effectively
Select a safe water location (calm lake or controlled area) and provide safety equipment plus supervision staff. Encourage teams to sketch a quick plan before building and to assign roles (knot tying, structure assembly, stability check, paddling strategy). After the race, debrief on what design choices worked and how teams adapted. When organized well, the Raft Building Challenge becomes a thrilling team building activity that strengthens collaboration, creativity, and teamwork under pressure.
