What is Strengths Spotlight Round?
Strengths Spotlight Round is a recognition-based team building activity where each participant gives a short, specific shout-out about a teammate’s strength and impact. Instead of generic praise, people highlight a behavior (“you clarify priorities fast”) and the result (“it saved us time and reduced confusion”).
How do you play Strengths Spotlight Round?
Arrange the group in a circle (or use a speaking order online). Each person chooses one teammate and delivers a 20–30 second recognition using a simple template: “I appreciate your strength in ___ because it helps the team by ___.” Continue until everyone has given (and received) at least one spotlight. For larger teams, do it in breakouts of 6–10.
Why it’s great for a team
Recognition increases motivation and reinforces behaviors the team wants more of. It also helps people understand how they’re perceived and valued, which strengthens belonging. Over time, this improves collaboration because people become more aware of who to rely on for what.
How to organize it effectively
Keep it specific and workplace-relevant. Avoid comparisons (“best,” “only one who…”). If the team is new, provide examples of strengths (clarity, reliability, calm under pressure, creative framing). End with a quick reflection: “What strength do we want to lean on more this month?”
