What is The Mysterious Object?
The Mysterious Object is an improvisation-style team building activity where teams receive a random object (or image) and invent a compelling purpose, origin story, or product pitch for it. The object is intentionally ambiguous, forcing teams to create meaning together.
How do you play The Mysterious Object?
Split into teams of 2–5 and give each team one object or image. Give a prompt: what is it, who is it for, why does it matter? Teams get 5–7 minutes to prepare a 60–90 second pitch, then present. Optional awards: most convincing, funniest, most innovative, best storytelling.
Why it’s great for a team
This activity reduces overthinking and trains teams to build on each other’s ideas quickly. It improves improvisation, narrative clarity, and presentation confidence in a low-stakes format. It is especially useful for teams that default to “yes, but” and need more creative momentum.
How to organize it effectively
Pick objects that are recognizable and slightly weird, not technical. Time-box preparation and pitches strictly to protect energy. Model a playful but professional tone. Debrief on what made pitches convincing and where the team needs more narrative clarity in real work.
