Place Bernard

Place Bernard is a traditional brasserie in the centre of Bourg-en-Bresse that opened in 1999 and occupies the ground floor of the Hôtel de France. The interior evokes the Blanc family history with a large black-and-white photo fresco depicting scenes of daily life, portraits and vintage objects, creating an atmosphere of authenticity, emotion and conviviality. The restaurant belongs to the Esprit Blanc collection and highlights local sourcing; it is recognised in the Michelin context as a selected address for traditional cuisine. A warm dining room opens onto a bright, glass-roofed conservatory that provides an uninterrupted view of the central fountain and the cours de Verdun, and the setting maintains a family-friendly vibe. The cuisine is classic French terroir—refined yet generous—presented seasonally and focused on the regional specialties of the Pays de Bresse. Georges Blanc is the chef; the brasserie is rooted in his regional culinary heritage and highlights his legacy with wines from the Domaine d’Azenay, a property of the chef. Specialties include Volaille de Bresse AOP (Bresse poultry), quenelles de brochet with crayfish sauce, tête de veau, omble chevalier on leek fondue, terrine bourgeoise de venaison (venison terrine) and fresh cuisses de grenouilles en persillade (frog legs).
