The partner's word

Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium is a distinguished historic building constructed between 1932 and 1934. Designed by architect Arthur Brown, Jr., it is part of a tripartite group of buildings in the Federal Triangle, notable for their steel frames clad in Indiana limestone and red terra-cotta tiled roofs. The auditorium itself features a strong vertical emphasis, with a classical facade divided into a rusticated base, a mid-section, and a monumental attic crowned by a cornice and pediment.

The building’s exterior is marked by six colossal fluted Roman Doric columns rising over 62 feet, framing three 20-foot tall arched entrances with gilded aluminum gates. Beaux Arts sculptures, including allegorical pediment groups and bas-relief panels, adorn the facade, symbolizing national themes. Granite stairs lead to the main doors, and decorative bracket lamps with gilded aluminum pineapple finials add to the classical grandeur.

Inside, the auditorium is an acoustical marvel with limestone-finished walls and piers, marble floors in rectilinear patterns, and polished oak details. The vast auditorium space, standing more than 60 feet high, is surrounded by fluted Doric columns and features crushed clam shell walls for acoustics. The interior includes colossal brass and aluminum luminaries suspended from the ceiling, contributing to the elegant atmosphere. The lobby offers space for registration, drinks, and coat check, while a third-floor exterior balcony provides views of the Washington Monument, Constitution Avenue museums, and the Capitol Building.

The venue offers over 10,000 square feet of indoor space suitable for a variety of events, with capacity for up to 650 seated guests and 1,000 standing. Additional spaces include three smaller breakout rooms and a private lounge in the basement available at extra cost. The auditorium has been modernized while preserving its historic character, making it a notable example of American classical architecture.
