What is The Amazing Race (City Edition)?
The Amazing Race is an adventurous team building activity inspired by the television format. Teams compete in a city-wide challenge, completing missions at different checkpoints. Each location includes a task—such as a cultural quiz, mini physical game, logic puzzle, or creative photo challenge. After completing it, teams receive the next clue. The objective is to finish all checkpoints as quickly as possible.
How do you play The Amazing Race?
Divide participants into teams of 4 to 6. Each team receives the first clue to a starting checkpoint. At each checkpoint, teams must complete a task to unlock the next clue. Teams navigate the city, coordinate roles, and manage time while racing other teams. The first team to reach the final destination after completing all tasks wins.
Why it’s great for a team
The race format creates urgency and energy, which naturally reveals teamwork habits. Teams practice strategic planning (route choices), communication (sharing clues and coordinating tasks), and adaptability (handling unexpected challenges). Because the environment changes constantly, teams learn to stay aligned while moving fast.
How to organize it effectively
Choose a city area with safe routes, good connectivity, and interesting locations. Design checkpoints with a balance of physical, creative, and intellectual tasks. Use digital clues or sealed envelopes, and place facilitators at checkpoints to keep pace and ensure fairness. End with a results announcement and a short reflection on strategies and teamwork. When organized well, The Amazing Race becomes a highly immersive team building activity that strengthens collaboration, strategy, and team spirit.
